About the Event

In Cooked: Survival by Zip Code, filmmaker Judith Helfand examines the racial disparities of deaths caused by Chicago’s 1995 heat wave and the disproportionate impact on communities of color.

CSI will moderate a panel discussion where Director Judith Helfand and fellow panelists discuss racism as a public health crisis. During the discussion we will explore the current pandemic through the lens of racial justice. Panelists will share how together we can redefine “disaster” and reimagine preparedness, resiliency, and recovery.

Participants are encouraged to view the Cooked film prior to the event. The film can be currently viewed at PBS.
